Angela Miller-Rothbart was raised in Paarl, South Africa. After completing her matric at a Rochelle Girls School, she enrolled at drama school at UCT. She is an entrepreneur, businesswoman, advanced toastmaster and voice over artist. Currently she lives in Sea Point with her husband Henry. She is the mother of two daughters and has a grandson.
The theatre, poetry and literature has always been my passion since a little girl therefore I enrolled in drama school once I had completed my matric. During my school years my poems and stories regularly appeared in the yearly school annual.
As a young wife and mother of two little babies, a friend offered me factory- second denim jeans at cost price. I attempted to sell them in the neighbourhood. Not having a car, I sold them from out of the babies pram. So began a career that escalated into 7 retail outlets in major centers in South Africa and a factory that produced the stock for the shops, consisting of 80 workers. I travelled extensively attending trade shows and buying samples. Balancing motherhood and wifehood with a 14 hour, 7 day week was not always easy.
I retired in my 70’s and was then able to indulge my passion for literature and theatre. Giving back to society led me to volunteer at the Jewish Seniors Association where I met a holocaust survivor, then in her late 80’s. today she is 101 and in good health. Her stories of suffering during the war deeply touched me and inspired me to write The Lightness of Air. it is not her story but based on it and incorporated with actual stories as told to me. When I read the first rough copy to her, she asked me to publish it and dedicate it to her. We were both thrilled when it appeared on Exclusive’s most recommended list. Space between the Stars is inspired.
By the times in which I grew up in the country during apartheid and the characters that shaped my childhood, so defining the woman I am today. It was very rewarding when it was chosen to be reviewed on radio 101.4 among the books of the month. My writing journey has been remarkable, one I could never have imagined. The doors that opened and the people I have met are unforgettable memories. I feel very privileged to have been given the opportunity.
